Class A motorhome carports

Class A motorhomes push every dimension at once — length, height, and often slide-outs on both sides. The structure that covers one is usually larger than owners initially budget for.

Flat roofs collect equipment

A Class A roof is a large flat working surface, and it tends to accumulate hardware: air conditioners, often two of them, satellite equipment, vents, and solar. The roofline height alone is rarely the number you need.

Because a second air conditioner sits at the same height as the first, having two does not make the vehicle taller. What matters is the tallest single item, whatever that turns out to be — which on a well-equipped coach is frequently a satellite dome rather than the air conditioners.

Length is the headline number and it is honest

Unlike towables, a Class A has no tongue or pin box to account for, so the advertised length is usually close to the real footprint. The complication is what sits behind it: many owners tow a car, and if that car is to live under the same structure the required length can grow by twenty feet or more.

Decide the towed-vehicle question before sizing, because it is the difference between a long carport and a very long one.

Slide-outs on both sides

Class A coaches commonly have opposing slide-outs. If you intend to extend them under the structure, both sides need clearance, and that is before you add the room needed to walk around the vehicle.

This is the decision that most often turns a standard-width structure into a custom order.

The mistake to avoid

Measure these before you shop

Every figure below is something you can establish with a tape measure and twenty minutes. None of it can be safely inferred from a model number.

  2. 02Overall length including any rear-mounted rack or carrier
  3. 03Deepest slide projection on each side
  4. 04Length of the towed vehicle, if it will be covered
  5. 05Mirror-to-mirror width, for manoeuvring clearance on entry

Nominal size is not usable clearance

Whatever figures you arrive at, remember what they describe. The numbers above are the space your vehicle needs — the usable opening you must be able to drive into. Carports are advertised at nominal frame dimensions measured to the outside of the structure, and the legs, base rails, and corner braces all intrude on that opening.

This means the structure you order should be nominally larger than the clearance you calculated. How much larger depends on the specific frame, which is why the last step before ordering is always to confirm the clear opening against the manufacturer drawings rather than the listing headline.
