How wide does an RV carport need to be?

Width is the dimension people under-buy, because they size it to the vehicle rather than to living around the vehicle. The body is the smallest part of the number — access, the door side, and slide-outs are the rest.

A carport sized to the body alone is a carport you cannot comfortably walk around, open a slide in, or service. Unlike height, an error here rarely damages anything — it just produces a structure that is permanently more cramped than it needed to be, for the sake of a foot or two that cost very little at the point of order.

What actually sets the width

The starting figure is the widest fixed point of the body. Mirrors fold and are not part of the parked footprint; awnings retract. What you cannot retract — the body, the compartment doors when open, and any slide-out you plan to deploy — is what the width has to hold.

Walking room on each side

The clearance on each side is not wasted space. It is the difference between parking a vehicle and living around one: reaching a compartment, checking a tyre, cleaning a flank, or squeezing past without turning sideways.

Trade-off — Width is usually one of the cheaper dimensions to add at the point of order, which is why under-buying it is the more common regret. It is still a genuine choice — more span costs money and may need a heavier frame — so we present both figures rather than one.

The door side is not like the other side

One side of almost every RV carries the entry door, and often the main storage compartments. When the steps deploy and the door swings, that side needs materially more room than the blank side — enough to stand on the steps and turn, not just to squeeze past.

Storage compartments and maintenance access

Pass-through storage doors open outward and often downward. Basement compartments need a person crouched in front of them. If a side is where you access gear or service equipment, plan its clearance around the task, not around walking past.

Posts, bracing, and the open-versus-enclosed choice

On an open structure the legs are the only intrusion into the width. On a partially or fully enclosed one, the wall sheeting, any framing, and the door opening on an enclosed build all sit inboard again — which is why an enclosed structure is specified around its door and interior dimensions, not its nominal outside width.

Limitations

What this does not establish

  • A single correct width for your rig type. Body width, slide travel, and compartment layout vary enough between models that a category figure would be precise-sounding and unreliable.
  • The usable opening width of any particular carport. Only the supplier can state the clear width between the legs of the frame they sell, allowing for base rails and bracing.
  • What span your structure can be built at without a heavier frame or additional posts. That is a matter of engineered documentation for a specific product.

Confirm before you buy

Your RV manufacturer or your own tape measure
The widest fixed point of the body, the deployed slide-out projection, and how far the entry steps and door reach out.
The carport supplier
The clear width between the legs — not the advertised frame width — allowing for base rails and corner bracing, in writing.
Your local building department
Side setbacks and lot-coverage limits, which can cap how wide a structure you may place at your address.

Sources and methodology

Checkable without taking our word for it

  • Side-clearance allowances shown above are the Size Finder's own planning constants — 24" minimum and 36" comfortable per side — imported directly from the engine, so this page and the tool cannot diverge.
  • The door-side step allowance (30") and the default slide-out projection are the engine's conservative defaults, applied only until you measure your own vehicle.
  • Steel carports are advertised at nominal frame width; the usable opening is reduced by the legs, base rails, and corner knee braces. The Size Finder adds a 12" nominal-to-usable margin, which still must be confirmed against the specific product's drawings.

Editorial judgement

  • That width is the dimension owners most often under-buy, because it is usually cheap to add and easy to size to the vehicle rather than to living around it.
  • The decision not to publish a single recommended width by rig category, on the grounds that slide travel and compartment layout make a category figure unreliable.
  • The framing of the door side as categorically different from the blank side.
