How tall does an RV carport need to be?
Height is the only dimension where being wrong causes damage rather than inconvenience. It is also the dimension most often specified from a number that means something different from what the owner assumed.
Every other dimension tolerates a small error. A carport two inches narrower than ideal is slightly annoying. A carport two inches lower than your air conditioner destroys the air conditioner.
That asymmetry should govern how you approach the number — and the first thing to establish is not how tall your RV is, but what your height figure already includes.
The four kinds of height figure
There is a widespread belief that manufacturer specifications always exclude the air conditioner. This is not true, and acting on it can make you buy a structure a foot taller than you need. Some makers publish height to the roof surface; others publish height with equipment installed. Both conventions are in use.

Only the tallest single item matters. On a travel trailer that is usually the air conditioner. On a well-equipped Class A it is often a satellite dome sitting higher than either air conditioner. On a converted van it is whatever the previous owner bolted on.
Clear opening height is not the listed structure height
Once you know how tall your RV is, the second trap appears. Carports are advertised at nominal frame dimensions, and the figure quoted is frequently the height at the peak or the overall frame height. You do not drive in at the peak.
The question to ask every supplier
"What is the clear entry height, allowing for the corner bracing?" If a listing quotes only one height figure and the supplier cannot tell you which measurement it is, you do not yet have the information needed to buy safely.
How much gap to leave above the roof
The clearance gap between your tallest point and the lowest point of the opening covers things you cannot control precisely: ground that is not perfectly level, suspension that moves as you drive in, tyre pressure, and the ordinary imprecision of steering a large vehicle through an opening.
Minimum
12"
Workable when entry is straight, level, and unhurried. Leaves little room for uneven ground, suspension movement, or an imprecise approach.
Comfortable
24"
Turns entry from a manoeuvre requiring attention into something you stop thinking about. Absorbs tyre pressure, ground slope, and ordinary steering error.
Trade-off — As a planning judgement, height is often a major cost driver, because added clearance can affect post height, framing, bracing, and installation — though we do not claim a universal cost ranking. More clearance is not automatically better; it is a genuine cost decision, which is why we present both figures rather than one recommendation.
Limitations
What this does not establish
- A recommended height for your rig type. Rigs of the same category and advertised length routinely differ by more than a foot depending on what is installed on the roof, so a category figure would be precise-sounding and unreliable.
- What wind or snow load rating your structure needs. That is a matter of engineered documentation for a specific product, not of general guidance.
- Whether any particular carport you are considering will clear your vehicle. Only the supplier can state the clear entry height of the frame they sell.

- Whether the published height figure includes roof-mounted equipment, and what equipment was fitted to your specific unit.
- The carport supplier
- "What is the clear entry height, allowing for the corner bracing?" — and confirmation of which measurement any advertised height refers to.
- Your local building department
- Height limits, setbacks, and whether the structure requires a permit at your address.
