RV carport roof styles compared

Roof style changes three things that matter: how the structure sheds water and debris, how it behaves in demanding weather, and how much of the advertised height you can actually drive into.

Most metal RV covers are offered in three roof configurations, with fabric shelters and enclosed buildings sitting at either end of the range. The differences are not merely cosmetic, though one of them largely is.

Panel direction is the substantive difference

On a regular or boxed-eave roof, the metal panels run horizontally across the structure. Water crossing those panels runs perpendicular to the seams, and on a shallow pitch that gives debris somewhere to sit. On a vertical roof the panels run from ridge to eave, so water and anything it is carrying travel along the panel and off the edge.

This is why vertical roofs are consistently the recommendation for snow, heavy rainfall, and sites under trees. It is also why the price difference exists: a vertical roof requires additional framing to support panels in that orientation.

The boxed eave is mostly about appearance

A boxed eave squares off the edge that a regular roof leaves rounded. It changes how the structure looks from the street and very little else. If appearance is not a consideration for you, this is a straightforward place to not spend money.

How roof style affects usable clearance

This is the part that catches people out. A peaked roof is taller at the centre than at the eave — but you do not drive in at the centre.

So a structure advertised with a generous peak height may offer considerably less clearance where it matters — which is why the roof style is a decision to take after that figure is settled, not before.

Enclosure changes the question entirely

Adding sides moves a structure along a spectrum from carport to building. Partially enclosing one or two sides is a targeted response to a known problem — prevailing wind, driven rain, or afternoon sun from a consistent direction — and is often the most efficient upgrade available. Which sides to close, and whether to add a storage bay while you are at it, is the subject of enclosed carports, sheds, and storage.

Fully enclosing changes the structure's relationship with your local authority. An enclosed building is frequently treated differently from an open carport for permitting purposes, and it introduces ventilation and condensation considerations that an open structure does not have. A sealed, poorly-ventilated enclosure can form condensation when the metal surface cools below the dew point of the humid air around it; the full treatment is on climate, drainage, and condensation.

Choosing

Where the vertical roof is the default — exposed sites, trees, snow — the reasoning is drainage rather than sturdiness in the abstract. Where budget is the binding constraint, a regular roof is a reasonable structure and the money saved might be better spent on getting the dimensions right. And if you want the structure to do more than keep rain off, look at partial enclosure before you look at a fancier roof.

  • Which configuration is appropriate for the loads at your site. That is an engineering question, and nothing on this page is a load rating or a substitute for one.
  • The clear entry height of any structure you are considering. Only the listing or the supplier can state the leg height at the eave and what the corner bracing takes off it.
  • How a fully enclosed building will be treated where you live. An enclosed building is frequently treated differently from an open carport for permitting purposes, but the determination is not ours to make.

"What is the clear entry height, allowing for the corner bracing?" — and, for a fabric shelter, the replacement cycle for the cover.

Whether the configuration you are considering is treated as a carport or as a building, and what that changes about permitting.
