How long does an RV carport need to be?
Length is where the advertised number is least reliable, because a coupler projects forward of the body and a ladder projects behind it. What you park is a footprint, and the footprint is longer than the model name.
A model called "a 28-footer" is rarely 28 feet on the ground. That figure usually describes the body or the floor plan, and the parts that project past it — forward at the tow connection, back at the bumper — are exactly the parts a too-short structure clips.
Length is a footprint, not a model number
The reliable way to get the length is to measure the whole thing on the ground, from the furthest point forward to the furthest point back, rather than to trust a published length and hope it included the projections.

Clearance at each end
End clearance is what lets you pull in and stop without lining the vehicle up to the inch. It also keeps the projections — the coupler you might trip over, the ladder near the back wall — away from the structure itself.

Enough to park without clipping the ends, if you pull in carefully each time. Little margin for the coupler, a rear rack, or an imprecise approach.
Comfortable
48"
Room to walk across each end, work at the hitch, and pull in without aiming — and to absorb a rack or carrier you add later.
Trade-off — Length is often among the cheaper dimensions to extend, so buying a little long is usually a modest cost against a permanent constraint. It is still a real decision — a longer span may need an extra bay or heavier frame — so both figures are shown.
Do you want the tow vehicle under cover too?
Many owners size a structure for the camper alone, then wish they had covered the truck or the towed car as well. If you intend to store them together, the length has to carry both plus a gap between them — it is far cheaper to plan for at the point of order than to discover afterwards.
Future-vehicle allowance
A structure outlives most rigs parked under it. If there is any real chance the next vehicle is longer, a few feet of length bought now is far cheaper than rebuilding later — but it is a genuine trade against cost and footprint on your lot, not a free upgrade.
Limitations
What this does not establish
- A single correct length for your rig type. Couplers, racks, and tow arrangements vary enough that a category figure would be precise-sounding and unreliable.
- How the structure length you are quoted is measured. Some figures include gable-end roof overhang that shelters nothing at ground level; only the supplier can tell you.
- Whether a longer structure needs an additional bay, post, or heavier frame at your address. That is engineered documentation for a specific product.
Confirm before you buy
- Your own tape measure
- The whole parked footprint on the ground, from the furthest point forward to the furthest point back, including any rack or carrier you leave fitted.
- The carport supplier
- Whether the quoted length is the covered parking length or the outer roof length, and where the eaves overhang.
- Your local building department
- Front and rear setbacks and lot-coverage limits, which can cap the length you may place at your address.
