How to read these numbers
The tool returns two figures for each dimension. The minimum is the smallest usable clearance that still accommodates your vehicle and the clearances you asked for. The comfortable figure adds room that makes the structure pleasant to use rather than merely adequate — more walking space, more room at each end, and a larger gap above the roof.
Neither figure is a nominal product size. Both describe the opening your vehicle needs. The nominal size shown separately is what to shop for in order to achieve that opening, and even that should be checked against the specific manufacturer drawings.
Why we ask what your height figure includes
Height is the dimension that causes damage when it is wrong, and the most common cause of a wrong height is a figure that means something different from what the owner assumed. Some manufacturers publish exterior height measured to the roof surface. Others publish height with the air conditioner installed. Both are legitimate; they are not the same number.
Rather than guessing, this tool asks. If you tell us your figure already includes roof equipment, we add nothing further. If you tell us it excludes equipment, we add an allowance for your tallest roof item only. If you do not know, we add the allowance and warn you clearly, because being slightly too tall costs money while being slightly too short costs a roof.
What this tool will not do
It does not provide engineering approval, structural certification, wind or snow load certification, zoning or permit approval, or manufacturer approval. It is a planning aid that helps you arrive at a defensible set of dimensions before you speak to a supplier. The supplier, the manufacturer's drawings, and your local building department remain the authorities on their respective questions.
