What determines fit

Three dimensions decide whether it fits

Each one is routinely quoted from a figure that means something different from what the buyer assumed. That mismatch — not the size of the structure — is what produces a carport the RV cannot use.

Clear opening heightQuoted as peak or frame height
You do not drive in at the peak. The opening is governed by the leg height at the eave and reduced further by corner knee bracing, and that reduction is not standardised between frames.
Usable clear widthQuoted as nominal frame width
Advertised width is measured across the outside of the frame. The legs sit inside that measurement and the base rails intrude further, so the width you can actually use is narrower than the listing.
Footprint lengthQuoted as advertised model length
Advertised length usually describes the body rather than the footprint. What the structure has to cover runs from the furthest forward point to the furthest rearward point on the ground.

A peaked roof is tallest at the centre — but you drive in at the eave, where knee braces cut across the opening. Compare on clear entry height, never the headline figure.

Know which choices are expensive

Height, width, and length each move a quote for different reasons — taller posts and framing, longer trusses, or extra bays. Understanding how each choice adds cost is, in our planning judgement, more useful than a headline ranking, which is why we publish cost levers rather than invented price ranges.

Common questions

Straight answers

Do I need to size for slide-outs?
Only if you intend to extend them while the RV is parked under the structure. Many owners never do, and sizing for extended slides can add six feet or more to the required width. The Size Finder treats this as an explicit choice rather than an assumption.
Does this site tell me whether I need a permit?
No. Permit requirements are set locally and change. We will not state that a permit is or is not required for your address, because we cannot verify that for every jurisdiction. What we can do is help you identify which office to ask and what to ask them.
