Metal RV carports
Steel is the default for RV covers, and the specification that matters is not the one in the headline. Gauge, leg height, and frame geometry determine whether the structure you ordered is the structure your RV fits under.
Search results for RV covers are dominated by steel structures, and for most owners that is the right answer: steel spans the widths an RV requires, tolerates weather without consumable parts, and is sold through a mature network of manufacturers and dealers.
The difficulty is that these structures are sold on a small number of headline figures — width, length, height — and those figures do not describe the space you can use.
Nominal dimensions versus the opening you drive into
A carport advertised as a given width is measured across the outside of the frame. The legs sit inside that measurement, the base rails intrude further, and corner knee braces cut across the top of the opening at exactly the height a tall vehicle wants to occupy.
How these structures are specified

Steel, aluminium, and fabric
The same category is sold under a shelf of names — metal RV cover, steel carport, metal camper shelter, RV port — and for a full-size rig they overwhelmingly mean a steel frame with metal roofing. The material choice underneath the names comes down to three options, and steel is the default.

Corrosion and coatings
Galvanised framing resists corrosion, and how cut ends, drilled holes, and installation scratches behave depends on the coating system. On hot-dip galvanizing applied after fabrication, the zinc is anodic to the steel and sacrificially protects small exposed areas — up to about a quarter-inch of bare steel — so a minor factory or field cut is not in itself where corrosion begins. That protection has limits: larger cuts, drilled holes, welds, and broadly damaged or thinner pre-galvanized coatings fall outside what the sacrificial action reliably covers. Rather than assume cut edges either always fail or always look after themselves, follow the repair or touch-up procedure the manufacturer specifies for the coating system you actually bought, and ask about it in coastal or high-humidity locations.
Condensation under a metal roof
A metal roof can form condensation on its underside and drip it onto the vehicle when the metal cools below the dew point of the surrounding humid air, especially in enclosed, poorly-ventilated conditions — which is why enclosing raises ventilation questions worth putting to the supplier. - What wind or snow rating your structure needs. That is set by your jurisdiction and answered by the manufacturer’s engineered documentation for the specific product.
- The clear opening of any particular frame. The reductions from legs, base rails, and knee bracing are not standard between manufacturers, so only the supplier of a given frame can state them.
Confirm before you buy
- The carport supplier
- “What is the clear entry width between the legs, and the clear entry height allowing for the corner bracing?” — in writing, before you order.
- The manufacturer’s engineered documentation
- The wind and snow loads the structure is rated for, and whether the quoted framing gauge is the standard specification or an upgrade.
- Your local building department
- Whether a permit is required at your address, and whether it requires a certified structure.
